My dear mother, Sadie, suffered a long time through many illnesses which ultimately left her sad and debilitated. Although she left us, we are grateful for the peace that she now has. Her life was always a struggle from the time she was born until her death from kidney disease.

My mother’s sense of humor and talented hands are my legacy from her. I miss speaking to her and often wish for a few minutes to be able to tell her how much I loved her.

She is greatly missed by her 3 children.

I feel so bad for Alexander’s family to lose such a fine son in such a senseless way. If that drunk driver only used a little common sense and thought about what damage he could do by getting behind the wheel in his condition. May Alexander rest in peace and his family find comfort in knowing that they will be together again someday. Donna M Bogs

MY DEAR SON
ALEX

I’VE TOLD YOU ALL ALONG HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU.
I’VE NEVER TOLD YOU HOW MUCH I’LL MISS YOU.
I’LL MISS YOU WHEN THE SNOW FALLS.
I’LL MISS YOU WHEN IT RAINS.
I’LL MISS YOU IN THE SPRINGTIME AND ON SUNNY SUMMER DAYS.
YOUR MUDDY BOOTS ACROSS MY FLOOR, I GUESS I’LL MISS THAT EVERMORE.
YOUR GREAT BIG ARMS THAT HELD ME TIGHT AND TOLD ME “I’LL BE ALRIGHT.
YOU’VE LEFT A GREAT BIG EMPTY HERE WE ALL WERE BLESSED TO HAVE YOU NEAR.

LOVE MOM

ALEX THIS SONG’S FOR YOU

SING IT TO “YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE.”
YOU WERE OF MINE AND EVERYONES.

YOU WERE THE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE.
HOW WILL I EVER LIVE WITHOUT YOU.
YOU WERE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE.
FOREVER YOU’LL BE IN MY HEART.
WHAT DO THEY THINK THAT I CAN DO NOW.
NOW THAT YOUR GONE AND I’AM ALONE.
WHAT DO THEY THINK THAT I SHOULD DO NOW IN THIS EMPTINESS.
THAT WAS YOUR HOME
YOU WERE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE AND I WILL MISS YOU DEAR
FOREVER,
ALEX**THANK YOU… FOR EVERYTHING.
I’LL LOVE YOU FOREVER.

LOVE MOM

WHEN PEOPLE MET ALEX THERE WERE ALWAYS QUESTIONS.

HERE FINALLY ARE SOME ANSWERS.

WHY WAS ALEX ALWAYS IN SUCH A HURRY?
BECAUSE HE HAD SO MUCH TO DO AND SO MUCH TO GIVE IN SO
LITTLE TIME.

WHAT DID ALEX DO?
HE MET FRIENDS AND MADE THEM FAMILY.

WHAT DID ALEX LIVE FOR?
THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE, HIS WIFE, JULIE, AND HIS FAMILY.

WHO WAS HIS FAMILY?
SEE QUESTION # 2.

WHAT DID ALEX WANT OUT OF LIFE?
HE WANTED EVERYONE TO BE HAPPY AND WANTED TO BE LOVED.

WHAT WOULD ALEX SAY?
HIS FAVORITE WORDS WERE “DON’T WORRY ABOUT ME.” AND
“LETS DO IT”.

DEAR JULIE, ANN, WOODY AND FAMILY

I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER A FEW LINES ABOUT FEELINGS AND MEMORIES OF ALEX. HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST HONEST, CARING AND GENUINE PEOPLE THAT I HAVE EVER KNOWN. HIS ENERGY AND LOVE OF LIFE WAS CONTAGIOUS TO ALL THOSE AROUND HIM.

WE REMEMBER HIS EXCITEMENT AND AWE WHEN HE WAS HANDLING THE RED-TAIL HAWK AT THE NATURE CENTER AND HIS ENTHUSIASM IN DESCRIBING THE PEREGRINE PROJECT IN DETROIT.  ALEX WAS ABLE TO TAKE HARD AND DIRTY WORK AND MAKE IT ENJOYABLE.  I RECALL THE HOURS HE SPENT CLEANING OUT THE OVERFLOW OF THE POND ON THE NORTH 40 AT SEVEN PONDS.  IT WAS AS DIFFICULT AND DIRTY JOB AS I CAN IMAGINE BUT ALEX DID A GREAT JOB AND SEEMED TO ENJOY IT BECAUSE HE WAS DOING SOMETHING THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE.  AS I RECALL. HE HAD TO BE HOSED OFF TO EVEN START MAKING HIM PRESENTABLE AGAIN.

ANOTHER MEMORY WAS BROUGHT UP BY OUR DAUGHTER KATHY, NOW 23.  SHE REMEMBERS THE WORK HE AND OTHER TEEN VOLUNTEERS PUT IN TO CREATE THE HAUNTED BOAT HOUSE FOR THE CENTER’S HALLOWEEN EVENT.  HE WAS SO PROUD OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT AND ESPECIALLY OF HIS SPECIAL EFFORT.  HE HAD CUT A HOLE IN A TABLE AND STUCK HIS HEAD THROUGH IT AND SURROUNDED IT WITH PASTA.  WITH THE APPROPRIATE MAKEUP HE BECAME THE “MEATBALL IN THE SPAGHETTI”

DIANA:   NOW 16, REMEMBERS THE TRIP TO THE DETROIT ZOO WITH HIM AND SLEEPING IN HIS LAP ON THE WAY HOME. SHE STILL HAS THE PLUSH STUFFED LOON THAT HE GAVE TO HER SHORTLY AFTERWARDS AND THAT SHE USED TO ALWAYS SLEEP WITH.

JULIE:  AT ONE POINT ON YOUR HONEYMOON TRIP THROUGH ILLINOIS, ALEX CONFIDED IN ME THAT HE HAD NEVER BEEN HAPPIER AND FELT HE WAS SO LUCKY TO HAVE YOU AS HIS WIFE.

I FEEL FORTUNATE TO HAVE KNOWN ALEX AS A FRIEND AND AM HUMBLED BY THE FACT THAT HE FELT I HAD SOME IMPACT ON HIS LIFE.  I AM PROUD OF HIM AS A MAN.

ANN, WOODY:  I WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD TO HAD HAD ALEX AS MY SON, AS I AM SURE YOU ARE.

ALEX WILL BE REMEMBERED. THERE WILL BE TIMES THAT I WILL WATCH A RED-TAIL HAWK SOAR, ENJOY A SUNSET, A SNOWY MORNING OR A STARRY NIGHT THAT I WILL RECALL A VERY SPECIAL YOUNG MAN WHO LEFT US ALL TO SOON.

MIKE.

ALEX WAS KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER ON HIS WAY TO WORK.
HOW UNJUST.

JOHN.

Although you’re gone 26 years now, and today is your 67th birthday, I think of you often. Did you know that Dick passed away a couple of years ago, was cremated and his ashes strewn over San Francisco Bay? Happy Birthday in Heaven, my dear friend Isobel.

Isobel, here it is the anniversary of the eve of your death in 1973. I think of you often and only wish you could have lived longer — you were so vital to this world (and especially to New York!). I do wish your daughter would pay a visit to you and not be mad at me for my choice of words and picture. Maybe one day….
Love, Anne

Isobel, my best friend, arrived in the USA by herself when she was 18 years old. I met her at Schrafft’s restaurant chain where we both worked in New York City. She was the extrovert in the friendship and brought out the best in me. She was beautiful, funny and thoughtful (and a great dancer) and was loved by all of us. She loved living in Manhattan. Isobel married Dick Tracy who adored her even though they ultimately divorced. Sometimes in an instant flash I want to pick up the telephone and call her. Hopefully, she’ll get this message in Heaven. Isobel is missed.

Like many of our Tosh relatives, our Aunt Chrystal was a true joy to have in our lives. She was an inspiration to all of us through her independence, determination, delightful wit and sense of humor, ever positive outlook on life, and the ability to find joy in everyday experiences. Chrystal always brought a special sense of fun to everything she did. We especially enjoyed the guessing games with the mystery gifts she sent at Christmas. She found purpose and joy in helping others, and told me she thought, “This was the reason I was put on earth.” I have many fond memories of time spent with Chrystal, especially my experiences each summer while I was growing up, during the road trips with Chrystal, Grandma Tosh, and my mother. There were many times, when things did not go as planned and could have been upsetting for everyone, when she turned the situations into humorous and fun experiences. While making this last road trip with Aunt Chrystal, bringing her ashes from Hollywood, California, (via Colorado), to her final resting place in Seneca, Missouri, I was able to recall with great pleasure some of these unique experiences. What a legacy she has left to us–one that we would all do well to strive to make our own. Thank you, Aunt Chrystal, for being such a vital part of our lives.
With love and admiration,
Nancy Spangler

I will always remember Aunt Crystal’s infamous Christmas presents. It was like a crazy guessing game, sometimes ending up with us having to call and get hints. I will also remember her and Mema in the kitchen cooking on Christmas Eve, they were so cute. Aunt Crystal, I love you and I know that you are happy with Mema, Granny Branch (Elizabeth), Uncle Byran, and all the other loved ones who have left us. I am so glad you got to share some of you wonderful life with me, and I will never forget you.
Love always,
Christina L. Wilson

Family Star Goes Supernova at Age of 92

Chrystal Irene Tosh, of Hollywood, California, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2005, at the age of 92. She would have been 93 on February 5th.

We, her family, know “Aunt Chrystal” Tosh for her sarcastic tongue, her guess-what-it-is Christmas gifts, her geographical location in Hollywood, her late dog “Leaping Lena,” and her uncanny ability to put people and problems in their proper perspectives through humor.

Aunt Chrystal was born February 5, 1913, in Forsyth, Missouri—-the youngest daughter of Martha Allafair “Allie” Brisendine and John Wesley Tosh.

Her father passed away when Aunt Chrystal was only two years old. She had four sisters and one brother. Three of the sisters—-Beulah, Dorothy, and Docia—-died in childhood. Leila Gladys Shackelford and Forrest Churchill Tosh survived to adulthood.

As a child, Aunt Chrystal lived in Missouri and Arkansas. She later attended Northeastern State Teachers’ College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and The University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma (not Kendall College, as Aunt Chrystal would have been only 7 years old in 1920).

Aunt Chrystal lived in Denver, Colorado, for a short time—-working with her mother taking care of children.

Aunt Chrystal moved to Hollywood in 1940 with her mother, Allie Tosh—-spending most of her years there as a companion, housekeeper, and cook for prominent Los Angeles area ladies of gentry Sue Straub and Florence Stirrat.

Aside from meeting various Hollywood celebrities in public, obtaining their autographs, and exchanging recipes with Charles Nelson Reilly on the set of “Match Game”—-Aunt Chrystal’s other connection with the Hollywood community had been her stock in Paramount. Originally spending $10 per share for ten shares in the up-and-coming Bliss Company in the 1960s, she watched her investment grow as companies changed hands. As Gulf + Western purchased Bliss, her stock transferred to Paramount—-which is now owned by Viacom. Aunt Chrystal had sold her remaining shares in Viacom over the last decade.

Aunt Chrystal may not have received her star on Hollywood Boulevard, but her 1956 Ford Fairlane made an appearance in the 1968-1980 CBS series “Hawaii Five-0”-—in a 1975 episode entitled “Honor is an Unmarked Grave.” Thanks to a neighbor who worked on the program, Aunt Chrystal’s Fairlane received a payment of $100 to appear in a close-up shot.

Aunt Chrystal “dabbled” [her words] in writing. She had an agent and had published short stories in “Writer’s Digest.”

The “great” Aunt Chrystal is survived by her nephews, Leon and Bob Shackelford, and her niece, Nancy Spangler—-as well as six great-nephews, six great-nieces, seven great-great nephews, seven great-great nieces, three great-great-great nephews and nieces, eleven nephews- and nieces-in-law, five great nephews- and nieces-in-law, six great-great-great nephews- and nieces-in law, and three cats!

Aunt Chrystal is also survived by her long-time friends and neighbors Mattie Poggioli, Bert Larsson, Aurora Alea, and Richard Mentzer.

At her request, Aunt Chrystal’s remains were cremated—-to be buried along the foot of her mother’s grave in Seneca, Missouri, probably some time in the spring of 2006.

Shalom,

We also buried a loved one in Israel in December. My father-in-law was born in Palestine, fought in the War of Independence, lived a full life. Perhaps he knew Zvi. His name was Yehoshua Hakohen. We share in your grief.

We also send our prayers for peace in Israel.
